How has Czech literature spread around the world over the last two hundred years? Which books and authors have made a name for themselves abroad? Is there such a thing as an international canon of Czech literature? And if so, who constitutes it - and how does it change over time? The Atlas of Czech World Literature is the first to offer a systematic overview of how Czech literature has been received in foreign-language contexts from the early 19th century to the present day. It is based on a unique database of literary translations and draws on digital humanities tools - quantitative analysis and visualization. In addition to analytical commentary, the book features rich visual material: maps, graphs, and other visual elements that reveal not only long-term trends but also surprising connections.
The publication examines how Czech literature can be viewed in a global context and how many Czech literatures actually exist. What does "international success" mean and how can it be measured in the case of a relatively small literature? And how have the patterns of literature dissemination changed as a result of the fall of the Iron Curtain? Does state intervention, for example in the form of support provided by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, have an impact on the international circulation of Czech literature? The Atlas of Czech World Literature provides new answers, but also raises new questions.
