The collected materials of the international conference “At the Beginnings of Russian Statehood” deal with relevant and moot points of historical and archaeological studies of ancient Rus of the IXth-XVth centuries. The conference had to summarize the results of a 30-year research of Rurik’s Gorodishche, the first princely residence of the new dynasty in the Russian North. The role of Gorodishche in formation of Novgorod and Russian statehood is also revealed in this book. The collection provides new approaches to Russian history and its chronology, introduces unique materials demonstrating broad international contacts of Novgorod Territory.
