This is an in-depth commentary on an 1861 handwritten textbook of history of art and culture. The textbook was compiled by the famous Bulgarian educator Yoakim Gruev and was used as a teaching tool at the Eparchial School in Plovdiv. Its title, "Notes on Archeology", is misleading to contemporary readers because in 19th-century Europe the term "archeology" could mean "history of art". In this commentary, Adelina Strandzheva analyzes the textbook, using plenty of additional archival documents which confirm its function as a schoolbook of the National Revival Period. In this way, she makes an important contribution to the history of ideas and the history of teaching in Bulgaria. Strandzheva is a culturologist, a linguist and an expert on the National Revival Period.
