The edition sheds light on the whole stage of development of Russian cartography. The Russian atlas of 1792 does not only reflect the knowledge about the territory of the country, accumulated by the end of the XVIIIth century, but with the help of cartouches – anecdotal pictures used in the edition’s design – discloses the meaning of each region ruled by governor for political, economic and cultural life of Russia.
