The book contains Taras Shevchenko's "Autobiography" and three of the poet's most significant works, written in different periods of his life, in which the theme of a human's choice is deeply revealed. The choice between the free flight of the spirit and the illusion of petty earthly well-being. The poem "Trizna" and the story "Painter" are united by the poet's single idea: to stand aside from his fate and comprehend it from the height of the eagle's flight of an unconquered soul. The story "Twins" is consonant with this theme: it reveals the tragedy of a soul mutilated by Moscow slavery. Its heroes are like living embodiments of Truth and Wrong. In translation into Ukrainian, these works acquire a lively sound, the naturalness of the reflections of the Ukrainian prophet, who always thought in his native language.
