The history of German tribes before the Great migration (I century B.C. - IV century A.D.) occupies one of the most important places in the research of the genesis of feudal relations in Western Europe. The aim of this work is a thorough consideration of social order of ancient Germans as a complex historical and historiographic problem, beginning from the second half of the XIXth century up to 80-s of the XXth century.
