The starting point of the publication Slovak Intellectual Alexander Matuska is a fragment of the manuscript of an unfinished monographic study on which the literary historian Vladimir Petrik (1929 - 2017) worked and intended to publish it in books. The Matuska period in his research activities lasted more than five decades and he perceived Alexander Matuska as an intellectual creator in a specific time and space. He was interested in how this Slovak intellectual and literary critic was in relation to others, how he was in relation to himself and his own professional profile. He does not consider Matuska a “brilliant pattern” and unquestionable authority, but shows his “moral profile” and “intellectual power”. The unfinished monograph is complemented by a selection of Petrik's studies and critical works, covering the entire period of Matuska's creative career. This gives readers an attractive demonstration of thinking about Slovak literature and culture of the 20th century.
