The publication continues the documentary research project "Administrative integration of the peoples of the North-West and Central Caucasus into the Russian empire".
The first volume, covering the period from the mid-16th century to 1785 (before the establishment of the first Caucasian Viceroyalty), was published in 2018. The second volume, addressing the period from the first to the second Caucasian Viceroyalty (1785–1845), appeared in 2020.
The present edition is a revised and substantially expanded version of the second volume, consisting of three parts. It contains a corpus of documents related to the integration of the mountain peoples into the Russian state, primarily illustrating the experience accumulated by Russian authorities in organizing administrative governance in the Caucasus during 1785–1845. The materials provide a comprehensive picture of the foreign and domestic political, social, and economic prerequisites that preceded the emergence of various projects for managing the Caucasus.
