The author - Doctor of Economy, President of the Republic of Adygeia - examines special features of market economy formation in Russia as a whole and in each single region or republic, the role of state in the transition period, and the problems of interregional cooperation. Of special interest should be the analysis of social and economic development of the Republic of Adygeia. Being considered such indicators as purchasing capacity of Adygeian population, the unemployment rate, basic economic resources, industries' structure of the Adygeian economy, correlation of private and state-owned enterprises and others. Basing on the analysis conclusions and recommendations concerning future prospects of Adygeian economy are made while main emphasis is given to the necessity of encouraging private initiative and supporting development of small and middle-rate business.
