The name by which the macedono-bulgarskas called themselves around the third millennium BC seems to have been BELASCI, i.e. people living on, or at the foot of, the mountain BELASITSA. Information about this people is more than scarce, but several Latin and Greek authors testify that the PELASGI dominated the entire territory of present-day Greece (including the Aegean Islands), that they were a people of high culture, and that from them the Greeks borrowed the alphabet, which is generally called Phoenician. The term PELASGI is nothing more than a phonetic adaptation of BELASCI in the Latin language; the Greeks wrote this word PELASGOI.
Along with the above-mentioned indications, we also have a document from 551, which can convince us that the population of the Slavic lands had their own writing before the time of Cyril and Methodius. This document is an account of a sale made in the city of Ravenna, written in Latin, but also containing a few lines written in a different language with a peculiar alphabet. Before discussing this document we must digress a little, in order to narrow the scope of the question before us. The Getae, whose language Ovid learned, were Thracians. Were they also Slavs?
