This book, dedicated to the famous Latvian painter Sofija Samsone, is not a traditional monograph containing the analysis of art works and a narrative description of the artist's creative development. Rather, it is a story, woven from episodes of Sofija's life and work, from her memoirs, documentary evidence, and the correspondence between her and her daughter, who remained in Latvia. The front line separating them during World War II like a clumsy accident, continued as the Iron Curtain isolated Latvia from the rest of the world. Sofija takes refuge in her painting from all life's troubles and inescapable sorrows.
